Moquett Racing
Ron Moquett
Born and raised in Fort Smith Arkansas, Ron would go to Oaklawn to watch the horse races as a youngster. "It was the most amazing thing in the world, from that point on I knew I had to be a horse trainer." Moquett then met Bob Clifft who trained quarter horses and a few thoroughbreds. Because Ron was of light build, due to his running track and boxing, Clifft threw him up on one of his horses, before long Moquett was regularly conditioning horses. Bernie Flint, an established Kentucky trainer, met Moquett when he was competing in the Tough Man fights. At the age of 23, Moquett went to work for Flint. “I wanted to work for Bernie because he could teach me problem management, he had a diverse selection of horses. Not every horse is a stake horse and you need to know how to do well with those horses too.” In 1996 Moquett started training on his own, “I had a little money to play with and started out doing it all for me. I began buying cheap horses for myself, and I did well at Oaklawn Park .” With success owners contacted him to give him horses to train. Now racing in Kentucky , Arkansas, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Louisiana Moquett has an average of forty horses in his stable. Moquett takes most pride in taking a horse and giving it individual attention then turning a big profit. “We're kinda like a farm team” “Once they get to doing good, they're up for sale.” Instead of moping about a sale and losing a horse to train, Moquett smiles and watches his owners cash their checks. Check out some of the accomplishments Moquett has had turning a profit and having a great time doing so.
